Longwood Gardens

Longwood Gardens is one of the world’s great horticultural displays.  The garden wonderland, created by industrialist Pierre S. duPont, was purchased in 1906 to preserve its trees. It is now 1077 acres of dazzling gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains and a 4.5 acre conservatory.   The Main Fountain Garden now includes dynamic new spinning and spiraling fountain features, jets propelling water as high as 175 feet, new fountain lighting, and a more welcoming and immersive garden experience for guests.

We will have a guided tour of the gardens and a chance to view the new fountain display that is returning after a two-year $90 million revitalization.  Our tour will include a talk by Maynard Barksdale, the author of the book,
The Brandywine, An Intimate Portrait, which is included in your goodie bag

Opening Dinner
The University and Whist Club
Wilmington, Delaware

The first house was built on this property in 1766.  Over the years there were many changes to the property.  The present building was built in 1856 designed by renowned Philadelphia architect Robert Morris Smith in the “pure Italian style”. The tower, now at the center of the building was built to house a spring water cistern with a power pump for running water in the house.  The next owners, J. Danforth Bush and his wife, made changes to the property giving it the air of an English manor house.  The house became the University Club in 1937.  In 1958 the University Club merged with the Wilmington Whist Club.  The club is known for its fine cuisine and outstanding service.

Winterthur Museum and Gardens

Almost 60 years ago, collector and horticulturist Henry Francis du Pont (1880-1969) opened his childhood home, Winterthur, to the public. Today, Winterthur (pronounced “winter-tour”) is the premier museum of American decorative arts, with an unparalleled collection of nearly 90,000 objects made or used in America between about 1640 and 1860. The collection is displayed in the magnificent 175-room house, much as it was when the du Pont family lived here, as well as in permanent and changing exhibition galleries.
Winterthur is set amidst a 1,000-acre preserve of rolling meadows and woodlands. Designed by du Pont, its 60-acre naturalistic garden is among America’s best, with magnificent specimen plantings and massed displays of color. Graduate programs and a preeminent research library make Winterthur an important center for the study of American art and culture.
Our visit will include a tour of the conservation area of Winterthur, a guided tour of the exhibit Treasures on Trial (The Art and Science of Detecting Fakes) and a tour of the highlights of the house.
